23rd July-28th July 2012

'Off the Beaten Track'
with The Oxford Rhythm Centre.

Monday 23rd to Friday 27th
9:30am to 3:30pm
Explore your creativity, learn about music and rhythm, and have fun as we explore different forms of percussion and rhythm in our workshops. We will be learning traditional West African Drumming rhythms on the djembe and dun dun drums, along with the traditional songs that accompany them.We can cater both for complete beginners and those with more experience, as we teach basic rhythms as well as the solos that go with them.We will work together to construct different melodies and harmonies through different tones on boomwhackers, and design our own rhythmical pieces using the Oxford Rhythm Centre's wide range of percussion instruments. There will be an explanation of music theory as we explore in a very hands on way, how different types of rhythm work. As well as playing exciting, uplifting beats, we will also try some drumming for relaxation to relieve stress. Overall, the aim of the workshop is to have fun, be creative, learn traditional African drumming rhythms and their songs, and progress musically.

drums THE OXFORD RHYTHM CENTRE was formed by Kim Gajraj and Lukasz Lisak after they spent time in Senegal studying African drumming under Senegalese master drummer Yaya Siré. Before this, Lukasz had been playing the djembe for over 15 years, and had toured Europe with his group. Kim was classically trained before discovering her passion for African drumming. Kim and Lukasz studied the principles of drum circle facilitation, and shadowed percussion workshops from experts in the UK. They formed the Oxford Rhythm Centre to combine their knowledge of African Drumming with percussion tuition and give fun, exciting, and informative workshops to all ages and abilities.
