'Willow Baskets with Different Weaves'
with Mary Butcher.

Monday to Thursday

A course for beginners, or those with experience, to gain skills and try weaves new to them. Everyone will begin with a round Guildford shopper, made in an unusual way by Jack West as part of his repertoire which was sold in smart London shops and which has the base and side all in one. Students will then progress in a direction of their choice after discussion with the tutor. This could include small scale sculptural work. Short, fine willow in brown, buff and white will be provided at cost. The brown will include many varieties with their individual scents and colours.
MARY BUTCHER is a willow specialist, having worked on the plank for about eight years. Opportunities to learn from other makers and involvement with the Creative Basketry course in London, extended her horizons. She has enjoyed teaching a wide variety of techniques and approaches. Contacts with art schools with wide remits, with groups in Europe, Japan and the USA, have given her a wide field of view. Curation of major exhibitions for the Crafts Council, the Irish Crafts Council and independent galleries has introduced the wider public to basket making in all its forms. She regards this as a responsibility she owes to the past generations who have left us a fine tradition.

Course Cost for 4 days £132.
Materials cost to students - max £20 but students will pay only for what they use.
Non Refundable Deposit £50.
