Wednesday to Friday
The focus for these three days will be round structures, suitable both for beginners or
the more advanced. Starting with a basic round basket with handle and then moving
on to other styles, according to experience, for example: lidded baskets, bread and fruit
baskets or other more abstract structures. We will work our way through a number of
techniques suited to individual needs. I will share information about small-scale willow
growing and other suitable basketmaking materials available for free, in order to
encourage students to continue making independently. Our material will be my own
East Oxford-grown willow with the bark on, for stunning colours, textures and scents.

JOANNA GILMOUR made her first basket fifteen years ago at a Pitt
Rivers Museum workshop, and got hooked. Since then she has been
making baskets and larger structures using her own willow and a variety of
other materials. Jo founded Oxfordshire Basketmakers ten years ago, and taught for seven years on
the City & Guilds Basketmaking course at the City Lit, London. Her work appears in many publications
and exhibitions.
