'Beginning Books'
with Michael Harrison.

Monday to Wednesday

The beginning books 3 day course is for those who have not yet had the confidence to start on book making or creative writing & it is divided into two parts. You can choose to do either or both of them – but they are planned to work perfectly together. The mornings (9.30-12.30) are an introduction to creative writing. I teach you a fool-proof method of moving from an empty mind to a full page. We work on poetry, narrative, and journals. It is embarrassment-free – no reading out for group criticism! Everyone will take home pieces of writing they should be proud of, instructions on how to move forward, and lots of confidence. The afternoons (1.30-4.30) are an introduction to simple book structures. Each day you will learn a different book form, each of which has endless variations. You will take home clear instruction sheets, lots of samples & beautifully finished books. Those who come for the whole day will find that the morning’s writing is designed to fit the afternoon’s structure, so that each day finishes with a complete little book.
MICHAEL HARRISON has published over forty books for children & five for adults. He has taught on nine previous Oxford Summer Schools & has taught similar courses for Oxford University's Department for Continuing Education.
(NB. We do not do traditional book-binding.)
This 'Beginning Books' course is a good warm-up for, but is not essential for
the 'Altered Books' Course
